Take Care Of Your Eyes

Convergence Exercises For The Eyes: When we see objects which are as close as 6-8 cm infront of us, both our eyes converge that is move towards each other while looking at it. However, if our eyes do not converge properly then this distance recedes to 10-12 cm away from us and we cannot see the objects which are at closer range. This condition of weak convergence results from spending long hours before a computer or a television set, or from too much reading and writing. Although exercising helps correct this problem of convergence, but results may show only after continuous practice for over 2 - 2 1/2 months.

Exercise Steps:

  1. Sitting straight look at an object further away.
  2. Take a pencil and holding it at an arms length try to concentrate on its nib.
  3. Slowly try to bring it closer to you, keeping the nib of the pencil at your eye level.
  4. Stop moving the pencil nib at the point where you feel your eyes straining to see it or tiredness in your eyes. Pause the pencil nib for 10 seconds. The nib now should be very clear and distinct without any blurring.
  5. Now again take the pencil back at arms length and hold it there for about 10 seconds.
  6. Repeat this entire exercise at least 10 times.
  7. However if you are a first timer to this exercise, try to space its repititions by doing once in the morning for 5 minutes and in the evening again for 5 more minutes.
  8. After 2 weeks, increase the time duration to 15 minutes.

Tips:

  1. To avoid convergence problems, use flat screen computers and TVs, which do not strain your eyes too much and therefore do not dry up your eyes.
  2. Keep the monitor at a safe distance of 2-3 feet away. Blink or close your eyes every now and then and do take your eyes off the screen every 5-10 minutes.
  3. Use eye lubricant drops whenever irritation occurs.
  4. Do not sit directly under the air conditioner or in front of it, see that the air draft doesn't hit your face directly as it dries up the tears faster.
  5. If you are having eyesight problems and convergence insufficiency, that is eyes that are too tired to deal with near distance work, make sure you also get your eyes tested by an eye surgeon.
