Cosmetic Surgery - Types And Procedures

The most prevalent aesthetic/cosmetic procedures are listed below. Most of these types of surgery are more commonly known by their "common names."

Facial Cosmetic Surgery:
Blepharoplasty - Eyelid Surgery:

This procedure of cosmetic surgery corrects "droopy eyes" and bags under eyes or "puffiness" which makes you look older or tired. Bags under eyes maybe caused by age or can be inherited and are solved through Blepharoplasty by removing fat, excess skin, and extra muscle tissue from around the eyes, giving you smooth, firm skin around the eyes and ridding you of droopy eyelids. Scarring from this procedure is usually very light and thin, and since the incisions are made in the natural crease of your eyelids, scars are rarely visible. Following the procedure, the plastic surgeon will lubricate and bandage your eyes. Most of the time people can read and watch TV in just one or two days. Many patients feel comfortable to return to their normal activities and work after about a week. Blepharoplasty can be performed alone or in conjunction with other facial procedures such as facelifts or brow lifts. However before perfomring this surgery an ophthalmologist needs to be consulted.

2. Rhinoplasty - Nose Job: Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery which deals with nose surgeries to reshape your nose, correct the size of your nose, correct the shape of the nose tip; nose bridge; span of the nostrils; angle between the nose and upper lip and corrects nose related birth defects and also deals with Upper respiratory problems. In experienced and skilled hands, a lot can be done on the nose - a long nose can be shortened, a hump can be removed or a saddle highlighted; a crooked nose can be straightened and a turned-up nose turned down. There are no visible scars because the stitching is done from within. This is a very common cosmetic surgerical procedure where post surgery the first couple days, the area will be a bit swollen and bruised, but this will subside. Patients are usually up and returning to most of their normal activities in just a couple of days. Patients with glasses will have to wear contacts or prop them on their fore head or cheeks until the nose in completely healed.

3. Mentoplasty - Chin Surgery: Chin Surgery or Mentoplasty is done either to build the chin up or to cut down its size: a weak chin can be augmented with a silicone mould and a jutting chin can be reduced by removing the excess bone. Surgery can be performed on the cheek bones to highlight them. The final change of appearance following surgery on the chin is dramatic, but there is an initial period of puffiness of the face and this may take a couple of months to subside.

4. Otoplasty - Ear Pinning: Ear pinning or Otoplasty is done for protruding ears. This is a short, simple and completely safe operation. The scar is not visible as the stitches are put behind the ears. Otoplasty is one of the few cosmetic procedures appropriate for children.Ear surgery can be performed on children as young as four years old, when the ears are almost fully developed. The procedure is more popular for males than females, because short hair styles are more common for males and make ear deformities more difficult to hide. Apart from protruding ears this surgery is applicable to people with Stahl's Ear Deformity (Spock's Ear, Vulcan Ear, Satyr's Ear, Pointed Ear), Macrotia (big ears), Constricted ear (cup ear, lop ear), Telephone ear (larger at the top and bottom, smaller in the middle), and other Earlobe deformities.

5. Facial Implants: Facial implants are designed for augmentative, reconstructive or rejuvenative purposes. Available in a wide range of sizes and styles for the chin, jaw, nose and cheek, implants add or restore contour and/or proportion to the face. The procedure follows a similar pattern for all facial areas. The surgeon makes a small incision near where the implant will be placed, either in a crease or inside the mouth at the gum/lip junction. Then a pocket is made in the facial tissue, the implant inserted, and the incision is stitched.

6. Lip Augmentation: Lip augmentation is done on thin lips which have thinned with age to make them supple and sensuous. Popular choices are injectable fillers, such as Evolence, Restylane, Perlane, Radiance, silicone, and fat. Also available are implants, such Gore-Tex and Alloderm. These procedures can be done at any age.

7. Face Lift / Neck Lift: The goal of face lift surgery is to correct laxity on the lower half of the face. In patients who have significant aging changes on the neck, liposuction and/or neck muscle tightening (necklift) should also be done with the face lift to achieve optimal results. The face and neck lift are usually performed together, although in certain instances they may be performed independently. The incision is placed in front of the ear and follows the back curve of the ear before extending into the hair. The loose muscle layer under the skin is tightened, and the excess skin is trimmed. The neck lift involves liposuction to remove excess fat, and tightening of the midline neck muscle (platysmaplasty) to correct the bands that occur with aging.

8. Brow Lift / Forehead Lift: A brow lift involves surgically lifting the forehead to restore the eyebrows to their natural position, opening up the eye area. It can dramatically change the look without doing eyelid surgery, although in many instances both should be done for best results. During this procedure, the frown lines can also be softened by surgically removing the muscle that causes them.
