Hair Perming

Perming Techniques:
Any of the Salon type of of perm can be used with different techniques to produce a number of results.
i. Body Perms: These are soft, loose perms created using large curlers, or sometimes rollers. They add volume with a hint of wave and movement rather than curls.
ii. Root Perms: These add lift and volume to the root area only. They will add height and fullness, and are therefore ideal for short hair that tends to go flat.
iii. Pin Curl Perm: These give soft, natural waves and curls, achieved by perming small sections of hair that have been pinned into pre-formed curls.
iv. Stack Perms: This perm gives curl and volume to one-length hair by means of different-sized curlers. The hair on top of the head is left unpermed while the middle and ends have curl and movement.
v. Spiral Perms: These create romantic spiral curls, an effect produced by winding the hair around special long curlers. The mass of curls makes long hair look much thicker.
vi. Spot Perms: These give support on the area to which they are applied. For example, if the hair needs lift, the perm is applied just on the crown. They can also be used on the fringe (bangs) or side areas around the face.
vii. Weave Perms: These involve perming sections of hair and leaving the rest straight to give a mixture of texture and natural looking body and bounce, particularly on areas around the face such as the fringe.

Regrowth Problem:
When a perm is growing out, the areas of new growth can be permed if a barrier is created between old and new growth. The barrier can be a special cream or a plastic protector, both of which effectively prevent the perming lotion and neutralizer from touching previously permed areas. There are also products that facilitate reperming the length of hair without damaging the structure. These complex solutions are available only from salons.

Demi Perming:
Extremely curly hair can also be tamed by perming. This enables tight curls to be transformed into larger, looser ones. Demi perms are particularly good for short hair, giving a more controlled, manageable shape; on long hair they produce a softer, bouncier effect. The more advanced perms involve softening the hair by weaving it on to rollers and then neutralizing it so that the curls are permanently set into their new shape. To prevent frizziness and maintain the shape and definition of curls, special lotions called curl activators and moisturizing sprays can be used to revive and preserve the formation of curls. As with all chemical treatments, relaxing and perming can be harmful and damaging to the hair. This is because it removes natural moisture and leaves the hair in a weakened state. For this reason it is always advisable to obtain skilled professional help and advice.

Post Perm Tips:

  • Don't wash newly permed hair for 48 hours after processing as any stress can cause curls to relax.
  • Use shampoos and conditioners formulated for permed hair. They help retain the correct moisture balance and prolong the perm.
  • Always use a wide-toothed comb and work from the ends upwards. Never brush the hair.
  • Blot we hair dry before it is styled to help prevent stretching.
  • Avoid using too much heat on permed hair. If possible, wash, condition and then leave it to dry naturally.
  • If your perm has lost its bounce, mist with water or try a curl reviver. These are designed to put instant volume and bounce into permed hair. They are also ideal for eliminating frizziness on naturally curly hair.
  • Expect your perm to last three to six months, depending on the technique and lotion used.
  • Professional Tip: Hair needs to be strong and healthy to take any type of chemical treatment. To check hair strength and natural elasticity, pluck out a hair and hold it firmly between the fingers of both hands, then pull gently. If the hair breaks with hardly any stretching, it is weak and in poor condition, in which case all chemical treatments should be avoided.
