Hair Care For Teenagers

Teenagers are bombarded with hormonal changes and disturbances during puberty, and these changes can have a direct effect on the hair. Normally, this shows itself as an over-production of sebum, or oil, in the hair, leading to lank an greasy locks, the same hormones responsible for acne cause this. As puberty progresses, this over-production will settle down, but can lead to self-consciousness and stress. The only way to deal with teen hair is to wash it, regularly. By washing away the excess oil, at least once or even twice a day, hair will become more manageable and clean. Look for hair products that specifically tackle oily hair.

Caring For Teen Hair:
Taking care of your hair depends on the type of hair you have, your lifestyle, diet and the hairstyle you have.
1. Your Hair Type: All types of hair needs to be treated gently, especially when it is wet. People who have curly hair have different care needed than for people who have straight hair. Wet hair can stretch, which can further on cause breakage and damage to the cuticle. Using a hair straightener or a blow-dryer to wet hair will damage the hair very much. During these years, that is the teenage years, you will find that hair becomes very oily and that is because the hair follicles which contain sebaceous glands that make sebum, may get overactive, producing more oil than is needed. Oily hair is usually a temporary phase during puberty. Many teens wash their hair once a day, it is good when you are active. As long as you are gentle with your hair, washing will keep it clean and frequent washing will not harm it. If you are prone to acne, it is better to keep your hair clean and off your face. If you are washing your hair daily, use a mild shampoo which is designed for oily hair. People with fragile, fine and weak hair will find oily shampoos very strong, so it is better to use a conditioner to protect the hair. Dry hair should not be washed so frequently. Washing maybe twice or once a week is suggested for dry hair. People who have curly hair usually have dry hair too and is more weaker than straight hair. So you should be careful and avoid hair appliances on your hair. Use shampoo for dry hair along with a moisturizing conditioner.
2. Perms: Perms take straight hair and make it curly. Hair experts often advise teens against perming as their hair is in a transient stage and the results are variable. While teens love to experiment with styling gels and waxes, it is advisable to always wash the hair thoroughly after use to avoid creating product build-up to add to the grease. To remove waxes and gels, look for shampoos that are 'detoxifying' as these are more effective on the oil bases used in styling products. Better still, search out products that are labelled "oil free".
3. Relaxers: Relaxers work by breaking the bond chemicals in curly hair. Relaxers can cause trouble if they are mixed in the wrong way and kept in the hair for too long. Relaxers contain lye which may cause hair breakage and irritation. Scratching, combing or brushing the hair before any chemical treatment may cause irritation. If you have scalp irritation it is better not to use any sort of chemical treatments. Using hair straighteners, blow-dryers and and curlers can cause hair breakage. Wait for 6 weeks before you straighten your hair again. Relaxers can cause hair breakage even if it is used correctly over a period of time.
4. Activity Level: Are you an outgoing person, do u take part in sports or are you physically active the major part of the day. This plays an important role. If you are physically active, then you must want to wash off the grime and sweat from your hair that accumulates during your games and practice. If you are swimming then chlorine will spoil your hair. If you are exposed to the sun or wind, then it is going to play havoc on your hair. Use a shampoo for dry hair with a conditioner. Wear a hat to protect your hair.
5. Hairstyle: Using styling products like the straighteners or hot curlers can dry out oily hair. Do not use styling products very often and on wet hair, never. If you want to use chemical treatment for your hair, that is also harmful cause if it is used the wrong way, the it will only damage the hair. It is best to leave this job to a professional as they are trained in this field of work and will be able to evaluate the condition of your hair.
